About 2 years ago, I was fully green fingered; I could easily spend most of my weekend time in the garden. I would have my music playing in my ears, idly thinking I should have a specific playlist for the task. I was making big changes along side some bigger renovations of the house. So progress felt big. Hindsight, I feel paints it in a rosier light, but certainly I don’t feel the same draw recently to get out there…
Much like exercise, work and other tasks awaiting your time, gardening can sometimes feel like there is a barrier that stops you from getting going. But once you do get over that psychological hurdle of starting; it is a thoroughly pleasurable exercise to be out there.
Sometimes the task can feel daunting, Where do you start?, Will I make it worse? Is it worth it?
But a garden is a forgiving space. I feel like it just wants to be noticed, engaged with. This year, recent events have given me the next month to spend as I see fit (well within reason). As other parts of this site have shown, I am trying to use my time fruitfully.
As I have the benefit of this time ahead of me, I am trying to set my mind to tasks in what feels to me like a methodical order. It means that I don’t feel as I need to do the more challenging tasks on day 1. That said, I am conscious that its almost May now, and the Summer is almost upon me!
For my Garden I have started with the lawn, it was evidently starting to grow with spring and needed another go from the first cut I gave her in the middle of March. For me, a good lawn is the equivalent of a good smile on a face. You need one, and a bad one will make the garden look like a the facial equivalent of The Hag.
Next up, was weeding the beds again this task has the quality of taking the scruffiness out the garden.
So thats it for today, nothing glamorous for the first day. I will try and post my progress as I go. For now, I have a number of tasks ahead.
- The dreaded end (ultimately this will be split into a number of parts…
- Pot on my chilli’s and seed some more.
- Pot on my Coriander.
- Re-seed my lettuce.
- Plant some Peas.
- Buy and lay edging round my lawn.
- … and repeat!
